Black Carpet anchor, Durbanite and fashion stylist, Mthokozisi “Swenka” Chiyi stopped by our Durban stores ahead of the MetroFM awards.

Mthokozisi is 37 years young, born and bred in Durban. He’s a fulltime fashion stylist and personal shopper. He is also a freelance fashion reporter for UkhoziFM. Fashion has always been part of Mtohokozisi’s life, with both his father and grandfather being involved in fashion in one way or another.

When reporting live from the black carpet at the 2017 MetroFM awards on fashion, it’s important to be on point yourself. That’s why Mthokosizi headed into Markham and put together a few looks

Describe the looks you put together:

“Definitely EDGY GENTLEMAN. The idea was to create versatile red carpet looks – from your serious “corporate” look to something that would be great for an edgy hip hop artist who doesn’t wanna conform.”

Styling and shopping for your clients must cause you to work up an appetite. What are your favourite hot spots in SA?

“I enjoy great food, great wine and soothing music, not to forget amazing company. I love small restaurants and cafés like Market (DBN), Giovanni’s (CPT) or anywhere in Parkhurst (JHB).

You covered a music event; we had to ask, what is your favourite song at the moment?

“I have two: uGogo by Sjava and Ekse Aweh by OkMalumkoolkat. Wait, maybe it’s 3 – it always gets me dancing – Thobeka by Babes Wodumo. Put that on and I’ll show you a dance move or two.”

What do you love about fashion and clothing?

“My passion is seeing people looking good, appreciating how they look and in turn building their confidence and changing their life. My dream is to ‘Dress the World’ – that’s why I’m helping people dress properly by shopping for them and educating them through the radio segment I do.”

What do you do when you aren’t ‘Dressing the World’?

“I spend a lot of downtime browsing fashion blogs, going to fashion shows or watching the international shows on Youtube. I hang out on social media and, as much as possible, window shopping. I don’t really have spare time as I’ve got to always be on point with the trends and fashion. But I do make some time for traveling. I love seeing the world (and the fashion outside of SA).”

What advice can you give SA men on fashion?

“Confidence is an accessory for all seasons, all styles and all looks. Wear it!”

THE MMAS: STYLE WINNERS

The 2017 MMAs at the Durban ICC featured some serious style players who pulled out all the stops. One thing’s for sure, even if they didn’t win anything, in our books they deserve kudos for their LIT style.

Here they are, our top style players.

Making a statement in head-to-toe Markham, K2 kept it monochrome with a bold print.

In fact, so on point are they, that they picked up an MMA not for their music but for the Best Styled Group. Their monochrome styling is a classic and we love Theo’s graphic patterned pants. They also owned the camo trend for one of their appearances. (Images: Bella Naija)

DuBOIZHip hop star, Du Boiz, won Best Music Video for Dope Dreams, a song he collaborated on with American rapper Tyga. We love that he swapped the rough ‘n tuff hip hop vibe for some serious style. His aubergine coloured suit ticks all the right boxes and the accents of lilac and red were a very classy touch. (Image: Du Boiz)

South-Africa-Metro-FM-Music-Awards-2017-February-BellaNaija-15-600x703Everyone’s favourite hip hop styler, Riky Rick, who won Best Hit Single for Sidlukotini, opted for ‘the brighter the better’ mantra when it came to his MMA outfit. We love the clashing 90s and 70s themes he had going on, where a bit of disco meets rave. (Image: Riky Rick)
