Cape Town-based young designer, Lukhanyo Mdingi, has got it going on. As one of SA’s rising stars on the menswear fashion scene and with a side gig as everyone’s favourite waiter at Cape Town’s ‘cool kid’ hangout, Clarkes, his own personal style game is on point. He’s also a really great guy who has the effect of making you feel like the most important person on the planet and keeps things real with a good dose of humility.
All of the above reasons – together with the fact that at 23 he showed his first collection at SA Menswear Week and has been unstoppable since – are why he’s our launch personality for the new #MKMlife campaign, which is an insight into the lifestyle of real life Markham guys.
We got the chance to ask Lukhanyo a few questions on shoot:
How would you describe the kind of collections you design?
I would describe my pieces and label, Lukhanyo Mdingi, as one that has a sense of cross cultural influences and design, together with a youthful outlook of African aesthetics and influences. Creating clean minimal looks that are distinct and powerful with a flair for contemporary elegance and sophistication.
Tell us about your production process?
I visualize each collection from various physical spaces and the production takes place in the studio spaces of my devoted seamstress. I’m incredibly grateful for my production team as well as my creative team. They are part of the Lukhanyo Mdingi label, the name goes far beyond a single man, but a name that is communal to those that share the same sentiments and ideals. The best part about the whole process is knowing that everything is done purely based on love and commitment.
What inspires you about Cape Town’s fashion scene?
The diversity and energy, which is pretty instant and electric. I sometimes find it so surreal to always think that so much force exudes from this tiny town that’s placed right here at Africa’s most southern tip. It’s beautiful.
