Black Carpet anchor, Durbanite and fashion stylist, Mthokozisi “Swenka” Chiyi stopped by our Durban stores ahead of the MetroFM awards.

Mthokozisi is 37 years young, born and bred in Durban. He’s a fulltime fashion stylist and personal shopper. He is also a freelance fashion reporter for UkhoziFM. Fashion has always been part of Mtohokozisi’s life, with both his father and grandfather being involved in fashion in one way or another.

When reporting live from the black carpet at the 2017 MetroFM awards on fashion, it’s important to be on point yourself. That’s why Mthokosizi headed into Markham and put together a few looks

Describe the looks you put together:

“Definitely EDGY GENTLEMAN. The idea was to create versatile red carpet looks – from your serious “corporate” look to something that would be great for an edgy hip hop artist who doesn’t wanna conform.”

Styling and shopping for your clients must cause you to work up an appetite. What are your favourite hot spots in SA?

“I enjoy great food, great wine and soothing music, not to forget amazing company. I love small restaurants and cafés like Market (DBN), Giovanni’s (CPT) or anywhere in Parkhurst (JHB).

You covered a music event; we had to ask, what is your favourite song at the moment?

“I have two: uGogo by Sjava and Ekse Aweh by OkMalumkoolkat. Wait, maybe it’s 3 – it always gets me dancing – Thobeka by Babes Wodumo. Put that on and I’ll show you a dance move or two.”

What do you love about fashion and clothing?

“My passion is seeing people looking good, appreciating how they look and in turn building their confidence and changing their life. My dream is to ‘Dress the World’ – that’s why I’m helping people dress properly by shopping for them and educating them through the radio segment I do.”

What do you do when you aren’t ‘Dressing the World’?

“I spend a lot of downtime browsing fashion blogs, going to fashion shows or watching the international shows on Youtube. I hang out on social media and, as much as possible, window shopping. I don’t really have spare time as I’ve got to always be on point with the trends and fashion. But I do make some time for traveling. I love seeing the world (and the fashion outside of SA).”

What advice can you give SA men on fashion?

“Confidence is an accessory for all seasons, all styles and all looks. Wear it!”

LOVE AND EATS IN THE CITY

While Vday has come and gone, we still think that there should be more than one day dedicated to love. So here’s our round up of some hotspots in Cape Town, Durbs and Jozi that will make your boo think you’re THE man, Vday or not, larny or chilled, it’s all about the effort really.

CAPE TOWN:

Chilled

What: Hail Pizza is the cute sister of cool-kid hangout, Clarkes in Bree Street.

Why: Their pizza and interesting cocktails are gaining a following because of their creative combinations at reasonable prices. Think Hail Kale, a gorgonzola, kale, grana padano pizza washed down with an OJ, champagne and vanilla cocktail. Oh yes!

Romance rating: This place with its 70’s Brooklyn retro vibe could break pinterest. Sexy, understated, and utterly cool.

Larny

What: La Parada Del Mar Camps Bay, living that Costa Del Sol life!

Why: A bit of Spain comes to the ever bustling Camps Bay. On a hot summer’s night, hopefully with no wind, what could be better than Spanish tapas with your better half in one of the most Instagrammed places in SA? Maybe the real thing, but seriously, with the beauty of the beach right there, not to mention some beautiful people speaking in foreign languages and of course the spicy, delicious food, it’s pretty close.

Romance rating: Feels like the visual interpretation of a Café Del Mar album.

DURBS

Chilled

What: Republik, ‘For The People’ in Durban North.

Why: With a tagline like that you can be assured that this place is as real as it gets. Not only in vibe, but the food served up here is the real deal… 100% grass fed burgers and some of the best local brands in craft beer are on the menu. What’s also on the menu is some kicking local music with regular open mic nights.

Romance rating: That depends, if you’re into some saucy, beefy stuff, then this gets a 10/10.

Larny

What: The Chef’s Table in Umhlanga Rocks.

Why: It’s all about food as art at this quaint fine dining restaurant. From the mid-century décor to the delicious food that’s seasonal and organic, everything about this place is impressive. You can even see the 12 chefs in action in the open plan kitchen to experience the ‘theatre’ of fine dining. If you haven’t won the object of your affection over yet then a Vday date here is sure to do the trick. Dinner and a show, for real!

Romance rating: It’s all about the sensuality of eating, from what it looks like, smells like, feels like and of course tastes like. Pretty hot we’d say.

JOZI

Chilled

What: Mamasan, a bit of Cape Malay in Melville.

Why: The quirky cool interiors are a reminder of the colourful epicentre of this community, the Bokaap area in Cape Town. The food is equally as vibey with a menu changing according to the availability of fresh produce and a lot of room for innovation. There is nothing traditional about the place rather a mash-up of Cape Malay influences.

Romance rating: Fun, fun, fun with some spice thrown in.

Larny

What: Urbanologi, as the name suggests in the very cool urban precinct of Newtown.

Why: This place is impossibly classy with the A-list of SA’s designers contributing their talents to making it look and feel like it’s worthy of a Wallpaper Magazine cover. On the drinks and food side of things, the concept is unique as it’s a restaurant within a brewery, Mad Giant Brewery, where it’s all about experimentation with yeast, beer and the food itself. If you wanna impress shorty, this is place, just make sure you know your fermentation cultures from your sauerkraut.

Romance rating: Another sensory experience bound to turn all 5 of them on.
