LAY IT ON GOOD

When it comes to trans-seasonal dressing, the only way to keep your cool and remain in high style is to layer.

As Autumn weather settles and the temperature continues to drop we thought we’d share some layering 101 tips using three key jackets that will be relevant all year round.

The bomber

This key piece of the 2017 Style Hall of Fame is slimmer and more refined than its 90s ancestor, making it very adaptable to a host of different looks. In terms of layering, longerline shirts and tees go well with the new bomber and call on its 90s roots, especially with a plaid-checked shirt. Pair with slim fit ripped denims and high tops and you’ve got yourself an outfit worth its weight in street-cred. For a more formal look, pair with chinos, a collared shirt and brogues and you’ve got a classic office or dinner-for-two look.

The fishtail parka

This classic jacket can be worn open or closed and its longer length makes it great for packing in those layers. For a relaxed look, pair with a tee, skinnies and trainers and for a more ‘I mean business’ look opt for a collared shirt, tie and knit combo with plain black skinnies and derbies.

The Harrington

Probably the most formal out of these three, the slim lined Harrington jacket in a nylon fabrication, will instantly turns up the ‘I have arrived’ factor of any outfit. When it comes to layering, keep it slim and fitted all the way through, funk it up with some colour or texture and don’t forget the accessories.

CAMO IN THE URBAN JUNGLE

Every couple of years the camo-slash-military trend comes back around;  the 2017 iteration of camo is still badass, but with a modern sophistication that makes it one of the key looks for the year.

One of the big features of this season’s camo update is in the print itself. From afar it looks like the typical camo print, albeit with pops of colour, but upon closer inspection the graphics are actually much more detailed. They feature motifs such as leaves, flowers (Dries Van Noten SS 2017 and Moschino F 2017) and in some cases even horses (Hermes SS 2017) which are as unexpected as they are impactful.

Here are some of our favourite looks from runways and campaigns around the world showing key items in the trend: pants, bomber jackets, parkas, printed t-shirts, and hoodies.

The pants

Skinnies aside, drop-crotch joggers, skinny jeans and utility pants in a camo print, khaki or patchwork of military colours and prints, are where it’s at.

The Tee

While a t-shirt is a t-shirt, plain and simple, it’s more about the print, design and details. With the new camo, the print is more graphic with unexpected pops of colour and designs that cross over into the exotic.

The Bomber

Arguably 2017’s hottest jacket style, the bomber is no short on camo interpretations. Its clean lines lend themselves to bold clashing prints, but plain khaki and forest green are also a yes.

The hoodie

The distressed hoodie in green and camo hues is definitely a key item for Winter 2017. Aside from comfort, it can be dressed up or down, giving a contemporary street edge to any get up.

The parka

This classic is a favourite all year round. No matter what your style your wardrobe should have at least two: a lightweight one for the warmer months and a thick and cosy one for when the temperature drops. In a camo print, or military theme, the parka is totally LIT and can be paired with everything from joggers and sneakers to formal suit pants and derbies.

STYLE DIARY: LULO RUBUSHE

Lulo Tevin Rubushe isn’t only a style influencer but is a successful entrepreneur. In fact his ambition for and dedication to entrepreneurship is infectious, having started his own creative platform RNDM Network four years ago whilst studying. With a business channel that connects young creatives and their cohorts with big brands and vica versa, it’s no doubt that Lulo’s style diary is one of the most exciting we’ve seen to date. It’s one that epitomizes everything the young Capetonian stands for, namely, originality and authenticity.

  1. What inspires you when it comes to fashion?

I believe I get my inspiration from various sources both local and international and mainly focused around urban culture and specifically the hip hop scene. Having said that though, I’m one to experiment with different trends and styles just to captivate the audience.

  1. What are some of your favourite trends of the moment?

Normally I’m not one to follow trends I’m the kid who juxtaposes himself against them but I’m loving silk shirts, gowns and linen at the moment! Lol, I’ve started experimenting with them myself and I’m really enjoying it. Also off-cut and elongated styled clothing.

  1. Why the boiler suit?

The thing I love about the boiler suit is that it is very unique, I have nothing like it in my wardrobe. It’s a garment that turns heads and it stands out from the rest.

Check out how Lulo styled our boiler suit in his unique way.

I’m wearing a Sotho straw hat, black sunglasses, the boiler suit, black MKM active performance skins and a silk bomber jacket and this is an outfit I’d wear to fashion week.

This look is very similar to the previous look without the silk bomber but this is an outfit I’d wear going to a summer festival like Rocking The Daisies.

I’m wearing a light tee, with a denim shirt tied around my waist, performance tights and sneakers and I’d wear this outfit on a casual basis where I switch it up with the denim tee in the evening.
