LET’S GET A ‘HEY’ FOR FATHER’S DAY

FathersDay-thumbnail

Father’s Day is upon us once again, so whether your ol’ man is into his hip hop get-ups, nails that hipster style, or rocks that old school vintage vibe like a pro, we’ve got something for him. Read on…

The Mac Daddy

Aside from his love of everything ’90s, especially the music, this Dad is bang on trend with the Golden Era of hip hop style. Think ripped jeans, checked shirts worn open, bomber jackets, sneakers, baseball caps and some bling. He’s the Dad every kid wants as his own because he never really grew up, and his style is on point.

Daddy Cool

With ’70s styling back, this dad knows his chinos from his skinnies, his Harrington from his parka. The look isn’t full blown; no, this dad draws on ’70s inspo but with an underlying hipster style and minimalist edge. He favours exotic culinary flavours, loves his old film camera more than anything except maybe craft beer – he really loves that- and has recently taken up boxing because he’s loving on all that flavour a bit too much.

The Godfather

This dad works a high-flying position at the JSE and calls some of the upper echelons of society his clients, so he has to walk the walk…. in premium leather. Even on his day off he takes pride in looking like he stepped off a Tom Ford runway. He values quality over quantity and has just a few key, expensive pieces that he works with other more low-key ones. He loves the finer things in life, like fast cars, real leather, bling watches and good cognac.

THE MMAS: STYLE WINNERS

The 2017 MMAs at the Durban ICC featured some serious style players who pulled out all the stops. One thing’s for sure, even if they didn’t win anything, in our books they deserve kudos for their LIT style.

Here they are, our top style players.

Making a statement in head-to-toe Markham, K2 kept it monochrome with a bold print.

In fact, so on point are they, that they picked up an MMA not for their music but for the Best Styled Group. Their monochrome styling is a classic and we love Theo’s graphic patterned pants. They also owned the camo trend for one of their appearances. (Images: Bella Naija)

South-Africa-Metro-FM-Music-Awards-2017-February-BellaNaija-17-600x679Nominated for four of the big categories- Best Newcomer, Best Hip Hop Album, Best Male Album and Song of the Year- and winner of all of them, Nasty C played it super casual but super slick in an all black tee and skinny jeans combo with stand out gold accessories. DuBOIZHip hop star, Du Boiz, won Best Music Video for Dope Dreams, a song he collaborated on with American rapper Tyga. We love that he swapped the rough ‘n tuff hip hop vibe for some serious style. His aubergine coloured suit ticks all the right boxes and the accents of lilac and red were a very classy touch. (Image: Du Boiz)

CASPERCasper Nyovest played it formal and wowed in the ever-stylish monochrome suit. Slick and classy. (Image: MetroFM)

South-Africa-Metro-FM-Music-Awards-2017-February-BellaNaija-15-600x703Everyone’s favourite hip hop styler, Riky Rick, who won Best Hit Single for Sidlukotini, opted for ‘the brighter the better’ mantra when it came to his MMA outfit. We love the clashing 90s and 70s themes he had going on, where a bit of disco meets rave. (Image: Riky Rick)

FROM LEXUS SA MENSWEAR WEEK TO THE STREETS

Before the month is out we thought it would be fitting to start the month of March feeling inspired with some local street style. Below are some key looks that struck the eye of Anesu Chogugudza, our guy on the street, bringing some style heat this summer (have you seen him in our campaigns? Oh, and he and his lady were voted best dressed couple at this year’s Sun Met).

We sent him and his camera to this year’s Lexus South African Menswear Week in Cape Town to snap some shots of some streetside style game with the whose who of SA menswear.

Here’s what he saw.

“I love Mzukuzi’s androgynous look which has a pop of color to give it a high fashion runway feel.”

img_0810 “Lwakhe shows us high-end street style with his triple print combination, winning!”

img_0822“Like they say, “friends who slay together, stay together”; this crew demonstrates their cool style.”

img_1107“From this portrait we can already see so much style; the turtle-neck and choker accessory complement each other; creative and stylish indeed.”

img_0708 “I love how denim can go with anything and everything. Here the denim shirt gives a relaxed feel to the look.”

LOVE AND EATS IN THE CITY

While Vday has come and gone, we still think that there should be more than one day dedicated to love. So here’s our round up of some hotspots in Cape Town, Durbs and Jozi that will make your boo think you’re THE man, Vday or not, larny or chilled, it’s all about the effort really.

CAPE TOWN:

Chilled

What: Hail Pizza is the cute sister of cool-kid hangout, Clarkes in Bree Street.

Why: Their pizza and interesting cocktails are gaining a following because of their creative combinations at reasonable prices. Think Hail Kale, a gorgonzola, kale, grana padano pizza washed down with an OJ, champagne and vanilla cocktail. Oh yes!

Romance rating: This place with its 70’s Brooklyn retro vibe could break pinterest. Sexy, understated, and utterly cool.

Larny

What: La Parada Del Mar Camps Bay, living that Costa Del Sol life!

Why: A bit of Spain comes to the ever bustling Camps Bay. On a hot summer’s night, hopefully with no wind, what could be better than Spanish tapas with your better half in one of the most Instagrammed places in SA? Maybe the real thing, but seriously, with the beauty of the beach right there, not to mention some beautiful people speaking in foreign languages and of course the spicy, delicious food, it’s pretty close.

Romance rating: Feels like the visual interpretation of a Café Del Mar album.

DURBS

Chilled

What: Republik, ‘For The People’ in Durban North.

Why: With a tagline like that you can be assured that this place is as real as it gets. Not only in vibe, but the food served up here is the real deal… 100% grass fed burgers and some of the best local brands in craft beer are on the menu. What’s also on the menu is some kicking local music with regular open mic nights.

Romance rating: That depends, if you’re into some saucy, beefy stuff, then this gets a 10/10.

Larny

What: The Chef’s Table in Umhlanga Rocks.

Why: It’s all about food as art at this quaint fine dining restaurant. From the mid-century décor to the delicious food that’s seasonal and organic, everything about this place is impressive. You can even see the 12 chefs in action in the open plan kitchen to experience the ‘theatre’ of fine dining. If you haven’t won the object of your affection over yet then a Vday date here is sure to do the trick. Dinner and a show, for real!

Romance rating: It’s all about the sensuality of eating, from what it looks like, smells like, feels like and of course tastes like. Pretty hot we’d say.

JOZI

Chilled

What: Mamasan, a bit of Cape Malay in Melville.

Why: The quirky cool interiors are a reminder of the colourful epicentre of this community, the Bokaap area in Cape Town. The food is equally as vibey with a menu changing according to the availability of fresh produce and a lot of room for innovation. There is nothing traditional about the place rather a mash-up of Cape Malay influences.

Romance rating: Fun, fun, fun with some spice thrown in.

Larny

What: Urbanologi, as the name suggests in the very cool urban precinct of Newtown.

Why: This place is impossibly classy with the A-list of SA’s designers contributing their talents to making it look and feel like it’s worthy of a Wallpaper Magazine cover. On the drinks and food side of things, the concept is unique as it’s a restaurant within a brewery, Mad Giant Brewery, where it’s all about experimentation with yeast, beer and the food itself. If you wanna impress shorty, this is place, just make sure you know your fermentation cultures from your sauerkraut.

Romance rating: Another sensory experience bound to turn all 5 of them on.

SPOTTED AT THE SUN MET

We first met Anesu Chogugudza back in April 2015 when he won a matric dance competition we ran with DJ Lloyd. We could see he had an eye for style and was a fan of the Markham brand, so since then we’ve stayed in touch and worked on various projects together (did you spot him in our windows this summer?)

Like so many people in Cape Town, Anesu hit the Sun Met this past weekend, dressed head to toe in Markham. With the theme being “Decades of Glamour” he took his inspiration from the 20s where the double-breasted blazer was the item to have. This look won him best dressed man and best dressed couple with his friend Abongwe.

Anesu picked out his favourite looks from the day and gives us all some style tips to take from each of them:

Shiraz chose to go for a neutral grey suit which is timeless, and this stood out for me because of the different way he styled it with stunning accessories.

unnamed-1

Here we see a brown suit put together in a really neat way with everything complimenting each other. This is one of my favourite looks because I believe in less being more and the gentleman here ably demonstrated this.

unnamed-3

My personal favourite clothing item was a double-breasted blazer and here we see Menzi effortlessly pulling off the suit look. With the finishing touch of a hat, he definitely resemble the 20s era.

unnamed-4

With a pop of color, the gentlemen from The Black Ties looked dapper with a switch up of the bow-tie. These looks were playful and colourful, yet still dapper.

unnamed-5

A suit with bold print or detailing is always a good pick. Solo nicely pulled of his three piece look with complementing accessories and this look is a personal favourite.

unnamed-6

Now instead of a blazer, we see a cape styled nicely on top of a waistcoat. This is a creative look which definitely caught the eyes of many and it was nicely done.

unnamed

With blue being a favourite colour amongst many guys, we see a blue suit with a fine check print. This look stands out because of how his accessories are not necessarily matching but rather complementing each other and this is what every guy out there should take note of. Nicely structured outfit indeed!

THE CHUCK II HITS MARKHAM

The original Chuck Taylor can be found in the wardrobe of most men. They’re seen on the streets, in the clubs and in the office. The Chuck Taylor All Star II was developed to meet the demands of guys who are always on the move. They’re built for comfort, so fit and feel better, but still have the classic Converse style.
