I LIVE BY THESE WORDS…
I have a few mottos but my most powerful one is “character is how you treat someone that can do nothing for you.”

LAST SONG I LISTENED TO…
Kendrick Lamar – All The Stars

ADVICE FOR UP-AND-COMERS
This industry is tough for up-and-coming stars. Finish school and study whatever craft you want to get into. If you don’t know anything, you will get screwed over, and your potentially amazing career will be short lived.

THE COLLAR CLUB HAS ARRIVED

This weekend, Markham hosted the very first Collar Club event at the Agog Gallery in Maboneng. Among the gallery’s paintings and sculptures, we showcased the latest trends in suiting and carefully curated outfits that blur the line between fashion and art.

MKMCollarClub-41

Our partners, Beard Mob and Legends Barbershop, had the crowd lining up at the grooming station, and Bacher & Co. made sure that our guests smelled as good as they looked at the fragrance bar. Scented up and looking sharp, attendees were also invited to play around at the game and tech zone, brought together by Mobicel, ASUS, and hi.

An exclusive selection of Markham customers, media reps and influencers were invited, and in the end, over 150 guests came, styled and conquered. After getting dressed up, guests got down with Naakmusiq on the rooftop. He was joined on stage by our MC for the evening, Sandile Ntshingila, and the rest is history.

We’d like to extend special thanks to our partners, Hunters Edge and Gordon’s Gin, as well as to our photographer, Alessio La Ruffa, videographer, Austin Malema, and PR coordinator, Thatho Tholo.

Check out our favourite looks below and if you missed out on this #MKMCollarClub event, follow us on Facebook and Instagram to find out when we’ll be holding the next one.

SAMW 2018 as seen by our Cape Town Influencer, Qhawe Hlazo

My  name’s Qhawe Hlazo, student and part time model based in Cape Town. I spent last weekend covering South African Menswear Week for Markham. In so doing, I really tried to experience the event in a way that made sense to me and the brand. By my side was @explore_pi ‘s and his camera, shooting tirelessly over the two days.

ZN7F1989

I decided to attend SAMW for two reasons:

First reason is Networking. I’ve always said, if you constantly surround yourself with people who know what you know, you are denying yourself of growth.

Second reason is Fashion. No explanation needed!

So going into this, I definitely expected to get a better grasp of the fashion world and its influences.

I was really moved by vintage bloggers, @vintage_tie_don @mr_khatha. There’s something so elegant about vintage dressing, and these two are able to create their own. Another hectic look for me was  @just_bradleyy. What’s so great about his style is how he mixes vintage pieces with current clothing creating a fusion of vintage and on trend outfits.

Best part? Everyday is Fashion Week. See you at the next event!

On Your Marks, Get Fresh, Go! The fashion news from #SunMet2018

This past Saturday we headed out to Kenilworth Racecourse for the Sun Met event to see how the gents put their own personal style to this year’s theme, ‘Style Ahead of the Field’. As the biggest menswear retailer in Mzansi, we have the front row seats to all things fashionable.

The theme allowed guests to draw inspiration from the rich African culture and pulled off well styled looks with a new age take on the continent’s fabrics and patterns – truly reflecting the glocal spirit – made in the world but with an African soul.

Accessories were plenty! Sunglasses, ties, lapel pins, pocket squares, panama hats and the cravat made bold statements.

We know we can’t mention swag and style without mentioning King Kotini himself, Ricky Rick. He played with tones of red to complete the look.

IMG_1697_preview.jpeg

Our eyes on the ground was none other than our stylish influencer, @aneyx. He represented the brand in an original  Markham suit . Dapper, elegant  and truly living the #mkmlife.

Cav’ the Swag:

And this years’ best dressed is…..

We are glad to bring you yet another exquisite instalment of the hugely celebrated SunMet, look out for the Markham Crew at the next fashion event!

SUN MET: STYLE AHEAD OF THE FIELD

2E4A6591.jpg

Following an eventful Sun Met last year we’re excited for this year’s installment of horse racing, music, culture and most importantly the fashion aspect of the Met.

On January 27 2018, Kenilworth Racecourse will Be turned into Cape Town’s very own catwalk when this year’s theme, ‘Style Ahead of the Field’ encourages all race goers to come dressed in colors, prints and textures inspired by Africa.

Do you have no clue where to start with your outfit?

Don’t worry, Markham has your back each year. We got one of our favorite Menswear influencer and stylist @aneyx_ to put together 3 inspirational looks one can use to decide on their Met outfit and here’s what he had to say about each of these looks.

“The theme is self-explanatory really and we’re even given the freedom of expressing our style by adding colors, prints and textures inspired by Africa.

The mistake that a lot of people will make is sticking to African prints which are not the only form of expressing Africa in an outfit in my opinion.

Look 1

As you can see in the first look, I’ve gone with a sky blue suit which symbolizes the African skies and I paired it up with a woolen golfer which is brown in color, brown symbolizes the rich soil in which we cultivate our plants which is the source of our food and essentially life.

Can you see how the theme doesn’t limit you to only the typical African prints?

To mix things up and add a bit of color I then chose a printed pocket square with a complimentary feather lapel pin which brings life to the outfit and instead of wearing the traditional formal shoes, I’ve opted for a fresh pair of sandals which only Markham has consistently woven over the years. This is my favorite look by the way!

Look 2

A man in a power suit is irresistible in business, at a bar or anywhere in fact, ask your lady friends.

For this look, I fell in love with this royal blue suit the moment I saw it.

Styled with a detailed tie and a colorful pocket square, I feel like royalty wearing this royal blue suit and it’s definitely one to look out for when deciding on your outfit for the Met.

Look 3

And finally the tux with a twist,

I personally found tuxedos very boring and only for older gentlemen while growing up. I eventually decided to rock one with a twist.

Instead of your conventional black tie with a tuxedo, I’ve bent the rules a bit.

A colorful bow tie with rich African colors and a complimentary pocket square.

To finish off this look, I’ve paired it up with a classic suede loafer which not only looks good, but feels very comfortable as well.

A few tips and tricks to those looking out to win best dressed couple along with their partners:

  • Don’t match each other, rather complement each other’s looks with pieces like lapel flowers, or even a pocket square that matches her dress.
  • Don’t forget your hat, it’s a Met rule but then again, rules are meant to be broken!
  • Always smile because that’s the final and magical touch to your exquisite outfit for the race day.
  • Be free and creative when interpreting the theme, don’t limit your look to following the keywords in the theme.
  • Last but not least, don’t forget to take a picture of your outfit and tag Markham on the picture. You will stand a chance to be featured and your look will inspire other stylish gents around the country.

Don your Afro-chic attire and get ready to celebrate Africa’s Richest Race Day in true style.

WHERE TO FIND THE BEST COFFEE IN JOBURG

Most of us need coffee to get our day started. Some of us aren’t really fussy about the coffee we drink, as long as we get that caffeine buzz we crave.

The aficionados and connoisseurs amongst us appreciate a more sophisticated experience when the black gold touches our tongues. This comes in various forms, from the classic cappuccino to the slightly more calculated pour-over coffee.

We hit the streets recently to discover the best caffeine fix the City of Gold has to offer. The gold standard of great coffee is a cortado, which we tried where it was available. If cortados are unavailable the next best thing is a flat white, but there were two exceptions.

Father Coffee

Father recently opened their second store in Rosebank, following the success of their store in Braamfontein. Their coffee is consistently great, with baristas weighing coffee grounds on a scale to make sure that you get a perfect coffee, every time. Not only is the coffee great, but the interior design of both stores is a testament to minimal Scandinavian-inspired interior design.

Firebird Coffee

This little gem in Maboneng offers amazing coffees, made with beans that are roasted in-house. Firebird is a little oasis in the city centre, in the courtyard of the old Cosmopolitan hotel set amongst contemporary sculptures and graffiti murals.

Loof Coffee

If you find yourself in Norwood needing a great cup of coffee, a small detour off Grant Avenue into Iris Road will take you to Loof Coffee. A fairly new addition to the neighborhood, Loof offers amazing coffees by trained baristas in a vibey, yet relaxed, setting.

Flynn Coffee

If you’re going to furniture shopping in Kramerville, make sure to stop at Coricraft. Attached to the store is one of Joburg’s newest and beautifully designed coffee shops. Owned by Belinda Flynn, this spot not only offers some great coffee, but they also provide barista training. Perfect for learning how to make the perfect cortado at home!

Bean There 44 Stanley

Bean There is South Africa’s first roaster of Certified Fairtrade coffee. The beans get roasted in-house in small batches resulting in fresh, rich coffee in a beautiful and modern space. While they have stores in Braamfontein and Cape Town, we feel that their store at 44 Stanley is the ideal spot to escape Jozi’s bustle, even if it’s just for a little while.

 BeanThere_2

The Whippet Coffee in Linden

Linden’s most popular coffee destination is a prime example of a neighborhood coffee shop. The Whippet is a beautifully designed destination which is a favourite meeting spot for people living and working in the leafy suburb. It’s the perfect spot for a breakfast meeting and a flat-white.

4th Avenue Coffee Roasters

If you’re looking to do some people-watching in Parkhurst, look no further. With a few tables spread out on the pavement and a small counter facing the road, you can sip your latte made from beans roasted in-house at 4th Avenue Coffee Roasters and watch the beautiful people of Joburg on a Sunday afternoon.

State 5 Greenside

Located on Greenside’s strip, State 5 are pioneers of the cold brew. Cold brew coffee is less acidic than regular coffee, has more of a dark chocolate flavour and is loaded with two to three times more caffeine. State 5 has a range of their cold brews on tap in-store and offers them with a variety of mixers that appeal to everyone. We tried the salted caramel cold brew tonic and it was refreshingly different.

Naked Coffee Melrose Arch

If you find yourself in Melrose Arch looking for great coffee, you’ll be spoilt for choice. First up is Naked Coffee, which has a few small tables inside and a small seating area outside. They have a convenient hatch to order your coffee while you’re on the move. Their coffee is hand roasted using small batch beans using artisan methods.

The Grind

You may have to do some exploring to find them, but it’s well worth it. The Grind has gained notoriety in Joburg for their coffee in a cone. Occupying a portion of the space in a specialist cycling store in Melrose Arch, they offer a couple of tables inside to enjoy your coffee. The design is contemporary and proudly South African, as can be seen on the hand painted art on their coffee machine. So how does coffee in a cone taste? Well, if you love coffee and you love chocolate, you’ll know that a synergy of the two is a match made in heaven.

WHITE HOT

With the rise of athleisure wear, casual looks are finding their way into the realm of the formal. Times have changed and us guys will find any excuse to dress down as opposed to up. A suit and tie is even pushing it for the office these days let alone the wedding of your better half’s bestie. And a tux? If we have to… And a white tux? Well, that’s just pushing it!

Maharshala Ali | Screen Actor's Guild Awards

Turns out, however, the white tux was the hottest red carpet get-up at this year’s awards season, from the Bafta’s to the Screen Actor Guild Awards to the Oscars. Yes, gents, the white tux is having a moment, so you better recognize.

Originally worn in the military, the white tux jacket became the formal ‘it’ garment for men in the summertime. Nowadays it’s become a ‘peacocking’ staple for those wanting to get noticed. Here are some of our favourite looks for this year’s awards season and some vintage white tux jacket wearing OG’s.

  1. The star of Moonlight, Maharshala Ali, went for an all white tux with slim shawl collar at this year’s Screen Actor’s Guild Awards. We love the leather loafers-sans-socks giving this look a laid back vibe yet being totally on point.

    sag_awards_MaharshalaAli

  2. English actor, David Oyelowo, had heads turning at the Oscars in his classic white tux jacket and black shawl collar.

    David_Oyelowo_Oscars

  3. And probably our favourite white tux look is from Dev Patel at this year’s Oscars. The simple styling of the slim jacket with peaked lapels, black pants and bowtie make this a classic yet stand-out look.

    DevPatel_Oscars

  1. It was arguably Sean Connery and Roger Moore as James Bond, who reinvigorated the appeal in of the white tux adding a burst of red to the lapel in the form of a flower. Fast forward a decade or two and who could forget Diddy in his prime.

ALL THINGS FASHION AT THIS YEAR’S DURBAN JULY INSTALLMENT

This year’s Durban July met our expectations and more, the horse races, the constant ecstatic energy in the atmosphere, but we paid special attention to the men-style and their interpretation of the theme ‘Colour of magic’.

Before we go anywhere far, our brand ambassadors showed everyone that stylish and elegance is the way to go as Anga (@iamnaakmusiq) and Anesu (@aneyx) ably demonstrated.

photo-2017-07-01-6-47-27-pm.jpg

Inspired by elegance and the fury white magic, Anga wore a Markham tuxedo and paired it up with an interesting bow-tie and pocket square, magical!

On the other hand, Anesu had another interpretation to the theme as he wore a Markham burgundy suit with a marble printed shirt and accessorised his look well with hints of navy.

Congratulation to this year’s best dressed gentleman, @naseemnazer, here’s a glimpse of what he wore:

Photo 2017-07-03, 4 40 07 PM

Throughout the day we kept an eye out for interesting looks and proper interpretations of the theme, the gentlemen definitely delivered!

Here are a few of our favourites:

We think these gentlemen definitely pulled off the color of magic in their outfits and we can’t to see what next year’s instalment of the Durban July has waiting for us!
